Celebrate Birth Day on Your Birthday

Celebrate Birth Day on Your Birthday

Mar 6, 2017

Today is my birthday! No one really remembers if the call came during the Price is Right or the Flintstones—the family debate continues—but 38 years ago, at some point in the late afternoon/early evening, I was born.

Elite Doula Clagry Heather Crossan

Birthdays always make me think, maybe because I have had the privilege of being involved in a great many Birth Days? It’s a huge honour and always a reason to pause for reflection, but especially on the anniversary of my own birth. I always take a moment to think about all those Birth Days that have included my participation as a doula.

We always celebrate the person born on a birthday, but we also should be celebrating the mother’s birth day! My mom spent 40 weeks growing and nurturing me. I was one of the VERY few born on my due date! She then spent hours in labour and did the hard work of pushing me out into the world. SHE should get a cake every year, and frankly, I should be the one buying her presents!

When I think about it, what did I do? Why am I the only one celebrated on this special day? My birthday is so much more than just me, it's about my family, the people who helped me make the transition to the outside world, and most of all it's about the woman who not only gave me the gift of life, but who has been my biggest influence and inspiration.

So today, while I celebrate, I will also take the time to acknowledge all the other mothers in my life. The ones who have welcomed me into their own Birth Days, who I have the great privilege of working with, getting to know, and love.

Remember to celebrate your mother, and all the moms surrounding you, when that special day arrives each year for you. Take the time to say ‘thank you’ for the hard work they did on this day. After all, it's the anniversary of a pretty big day for them as well. A day they’ll always remember.
